Goji bonsai (Lycium barbarum), yardadori, about 15 years

A goji dug from an abandoned yard: a strong, gnarled multiple trunk. Purple flowers, glossy red fruit, yellow autumn leaves. Photographed after leaf drop; a light maintenance pruning builds the canopy. One tree, photographed as it ships.

The story of this tree

An unusual species for a specimen, and a tree full of character. It was not grown in a nursery: it was found in an abandoned yard and dug out, a “yardadori”, the backyard version of a yamadori. What it brought with it is the trunk: a strong, aged, gnarled multiple trunk that is the whole point of the tree.

And it has something all year: light purple flowers, deep glossy red fruit, small light green leaves turning yellow in autumn. It was photographed in October, after leaf drop, so you see the structure clearly.

What I would do next

A light maintenance pruning is enough. It will build a full, well proportioned and credible canopy, which gives even more weight to that trunk.

The courier was late, but the plant is healthy, thanks also to the excellent packaging. A promising larch with a good line and already good foliage. A vaguely literati style that can be accentuated. It deserves a proper pot. Very satisfied.

FAQs

How is a specimen shipped?
In its pot, with the soil secured and the tree braced inside a rigid box. Delivery across the EU is included in the price. We ship Monday to Wednesday so the tree never spends a weekend in a depot. You can also collect it at our nursery in Merate.
Yes. Every specimen is photographed after its last major styling work and you receive that tree, in that pot. If anything changes before it ships (a branch removed, a repot), we update the photos first.
Any time of year. In the hottest weeks of summer we may hold a shipment for a few days. A tree arriving in winter should go straight to a sheltered spot outdoors, not into a heated room.
Yes. Lycium is deciduous and drops its leaves in autumn. The buds open again in spring.
A tree collected from a garden or yard rather than from the wild. Like a yamadori, its value is the age and character of the trunk.
