A bonsai is a tree, and real trees live outside. At Treevaset we grow hardy, non-grafted pre-bonsai that need real seasons — frost included — to build dense growth and strong character. If you want a bonsai that thrives on your balcony, terrace or garden all year, you’re in the right place.

Winter-hardy by nature
Pines, spruces, larches, junipers and yews evolved for frost. No grow lights, no windowsill struggle — just a tree living the life it was built for.
Real seasons, better trees
Winter dormancy is what gives a bonsai its vigour, fine ramification and seasonal colour. Trees kept indoors never get that reset.
Grown as bonsai, not rescued
Every tree starts in our nursery with bonsai in mind — field-grown, hand-selected, never grafted. That's a different starting point from a garden-centre "indoor bonsai".

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a bonsai really live outdoors all year?
Yes — it should. All the species on this page are frost-hardy and overwinter outside in our nursery in northern Italy. Cold dormancy is part of their annual cycle, not a risk.
Which bonsai are winter-hardy?
Pines, spruces, larches, junipers, yews and Japanese maples all tolerate frost. In severe frost (below roughly −10 °C) young trees appreciate wind protection and the pot shielded from freezing through.
Can I keep an outdoor bonsai on a balcony?
Absolutely — a balcony with a few hours of direct sun is one of the best places to grow bonsai. All our trees ship in training pots that sit happily on a shelf or bench.
What about "indoor bonsai"?
Most trees sold as indoor bonsai are subtropical species that merely tolerate living inside. We don’t grow them: we believe the healthiest start is a hardy species living outdoors — the way bonsai has been grown for centuries.
Are these finished bonsai or pre-bonsai?
Mostly young pre-bonsai: healthy trees with the traits that matter (bark, needle size, movement) ready for you to style. That’s the most rewarding — and most affordable — way to start.
