Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) – Care & Information
The Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) is one of the most distinctive conifers you can train — a deciduous swamp tree from the wetlands of the southeastern United States, where it stands ankle-deep in water and sends up woody ‘knees’ around its buttressed trunk. As a bonsai it carries that same ancient, riverbank presence: feathery green foliage, rugged fissured bark even when young, and a warm rust-orange fire in autumn before the needles fall.
What sets it apart is its love of water. Where most conifers rot in soggy soil, the Bald Cypress thrives — through summer you can even stand its pot in a shallow tray of water. Grown from seed and selected for a straight, noble trunk, each young plant is ready to begin training into a formal or informal upright, or the flat-topped, aged silhouette of a mature swamp cypress. Its needles sit alternately along the shoots — an easy way to tell it from the opposite-leaved dawn redwood.
Keep it outdoors in full sun — six hours or more a day fuels dense growth and the strongest autumn colour. Never let the soil dry out; steady moisture is the whole game with this species. Feed generously through spring and summer, as it grows fast, and give it a cold winter rest once the leaves drop. It is hardy, but shelter the pot from the hardest frost.
Cultivation note: the young wood wires well but the bark marks easily as it thickens, so check your wire often and remove it early. Trim new shoots back to one or two pairs of leaves through the season to build the fine, tiered ramification the species is known for.
- Grown from seed — an ancient, water-loving deciduous conifer.
- Feathery foliage that turns rust-orange in autumn before falling.
- Thrives in wet soil — happy to sit in a tray of water through summer.

Feedback from growers
This bonsai had quite a story. It arrived in poor condition, not due to the seller but because the courier took longer than expected. Treevaset was extremely helpful and immediately available to resolve the situation. Highly recommended. I’ve purchased from them multiple times and I will definitely do so again.
Young Pre-BonsaiFriendly communication and fast delivery. At first, it wasn’t clear to me that the seller ships from Italy, which made me hesitant when ordering plants. However, the plants arrived in excellent condition thanks to very careful packaging.
Young Pre-BonsaiThe courier was delayed, but the plant arrived healthy thanks to excellent packaging. A very promising larch with good movement and already well-developed foliage. It has a subtle literati-style character that can be further enhanced. It deserves a proper, well-chosen pot. Very satisfied.
Young Pre-BonsaiTrustworthy and honest seller. Well wrapped. Well received item. Recommended 100%. Ringraziare tanti.
