The story of this tree

In training since it was a sapling, wired and repotted by Luca. Natural movement in the lower trunk, given while it was young, 25 cm tall without the pot in a 9 cm pot. Photographed on 13 October 2026, as it ships.

Fraxinus ornus, the manna ash, is a native tree of southern Europe that is rarely used for bonsai, and that is part of its appeal. It is fully hardy, grows fast, heals wounds well and takes hard pruning without complaint. The compound leaves reduce with regular pinching but stay larger than a maple’s, so it suits a tree of this size or bigger. On older trees it flowers in creamy white plumes in late spring. Full sun to light shade, plenty of water in summer.

The courier was late, but the plant is healthy, thanks also to the excellent packaging. A promising larch with a good line and already good foliage. A vaguely literati style that can be accentuated. It deserves a proper pot. Very satisfied.

FAQs

How is a specimen shipped?
In its pot, with the soil secured and the tree braced inside a rigid box. Delivery across the EU is included in the price. We ship Monday to Wednesday so the tree never spends a weekend in a depot. You can also collect it at our nursery in Merate.
Yes. Every specimen is photographed after its last major styling work and you receive that tree, in that pot. If anything changes before it ships (a branch removed, a repot), we update the photos first.
Any time of year. In the hottest weeks of summer we may hold a shipment for a few days. A tree arriving in winter should go straight to a sheltered spot outdoors, not into a heated room.
Yes, it is a native European tree and stays outdoors all year.
Compound leaves like these reduce with regular pinching and repotting, but they stay larger than a maple’s. That is part of the species.
