Acer palmatum ‘Orihime’ — Characteristics & Bonsai Use

‘Orihime’ is a dwarf Acer palmatum cultivar with the most elegant, delicate, tiny leaves you can find among Japanese maples. The foliage is genuinely miniaturised — small, refined, and perfectly proportioned for bonsai at the smallest scales. New leaves emerge light green with subtle bronze margins in spring, settling into a clean light green in summer before developing green tones tinged with orange in autumn. The colour expression is understated but precise.

Growth is slow with a compact, upright habit and short internodes. Bark is smooth, transitioning from light green to grey as it matures. In open ground, ‘Orihime’ reaches 1 to 2 metres — naturally compact and easy to maintain at bonsai scale. The slow pace rewards patience: structure develops gradually but with the kind of refined proportions that define quality shohin work.

For bonsai purposes, ‘Orihime’ is best developed where leaf size and fine ramification are the primary design goals. It excels in shohin and mame styles, and pairs well with more vigorous cultivars in a collection — its delicacy provides a counterpoint to bolder, faster-growing varieties like Beni Chidori or Deshojo.
Cultivation note: ‘Orihime’ is slow but not fragile — it handles light well and benefits from morning sun to maintain compact growth and the subtle bronze spring margins. Protect from intense afternoon heat in summer. Because growth is slow, avoid heavy pruning in a single session; instead, make small, frequent adjustments throughout the growing season. The tiny leaf size means this cultivar shows wire marks easily — use the thinnest gauge possible and remove promptly.

Feedback from growers

This bonsai had quite a story. It arrived in poor condition, not due to the seller but because the courier took longer than expected. Treevaset was extremely helpful and immediately available to resolve the situation. Highly recommended. I’ve purchased from them multiple times and I will definitely do so again.

Friendly communication and fast delivery. At first, it wasn’t clear to me that the seller ships from Italy, which made me hesitant when ordering plants. However, the plants arrived in excellent condition thanks to very careful packaging.

The courier was delayed, but the plant arrived healthy thanks to excellent packaging. A very promising larch with good movement and already well-developed foliage. It has a subtle literati-style character that can be further enhanced. It deserves a proper, well-chosen pot. Very satisfied.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Acer palmatum Ori Hime suitable for bonsai beginners?
Ori Hime is well suited for beginners who want to work at shohin or mame scale. In my experience, its naturally compact habit, short internodes and genuinely miniaturised leaves mean the tree already looks proportionate at small sizes without advanced reduction techniques. The main thing to be aware of is that growth is slow — trunk caliper builds gradually, so patience is essential.
Both are dwarf cultivars with small leaves, but they behave quite differently. Koto Hime has very short internodes with surprising vigour — it pushes growth more actively than you would expect from a dwarf. Ori Hime is slower, more restrained, with the smallest leaves in our entire collection. If you want a tree that builds structure quickly at small scale, Koto Hime. If you want the most refined, miniaturised foliage possible, Ori Hime. For a detailed comparison, see our cultivar suitability guide.
Cutting propagation preserves the true dwarf characteristics from the roots upward. Grafted Ori Hime would have vigorous rootstock below the graft union, creating a mismatch in growth energy and a visible line at the trunk base — both problems for bonsai development. Our cutting-propagated plants grow on their own roots with consistent dwarf behaviour throughout.
Ori Hime is one of the few Acer palmatum cultivars genuinely suited for mame size (under 10 cm). The leaves are naturally miniaturised and the internodes stay short without any special technique. In open ground it only reaches 1–2 metres at maturity, which gives you an idea of how compact this cultivar is. It is also excellent for shohin (15–25 cm).
No. Like all Acer palmatum cultivars, Ori Hime is a temperate outdoor tree that requires a proper cold dormancy period in winter (below 10°C for at least 6 weeks). Without dormancy, the tree weakens progressively and will eventually decline. Keep it outdoors year-round with protection from severe frost below -10°C.
