Acer palmatum ‘Orihime’ – Japanese Maple for Bonsai

‘Orihime’ is a dwarf Acer palmatum cultivar with the most elegant, delicate, tiny leaves you can find among Japanese maples. The foliage is genuinely miniaturised — small, refined, and perfectly proportioned for bonsai at the smallest scales. New leaves emerge light green with subtle bronze margins in spring, settling into a clean light green in summer before developing green tones tinged with orange in autumn. The colour expression is understated but precise.

Growth is slow with a compact, upright habit and short internodes. Bark is smooth, transitioning from light green to grey as it matures. In open ground, ‘Orihime’ reaches 1 to 2 metres — naturally compact and easy to maintain at bonsai scale. For bonsai purposes, ‘Orihime’ is best developed where leaf size and fine ramification are the primary design goals. It excels in shohin and mame styles, and pairs well with more vigorous cultivars in a collection — its delicacy provides a counterpoint to bolder, faster-growing varieties like Beni Chidori or Deshojo.
