The story of this tree

Grown from seed, about five years old and three in training. A slim trunk with movement and a long leader left to grow, 27 cm tall without the pot in an 11 cm terracotta pot. Photographed on 13 October 2026, as it ships.

Chaenomeles japonica, the Japanese flowering quince, is one of the easiest flowering species for bonsai. It flowers on bare wood in late winter, often while there is still frost, sets scented yellow fruit in autumn and buds back readily after pruning. The wood stays flexible for years, so branches can be bent even when they are old. It is fully hardy and wants to be outdoors all year: the winter cold is what sets the flower buds. Our care guide for Chaenomeles japonica covers watering, pruning after flowering and repotting.

The courier was late, but the plant is healthy, thanks also to the excellent packaging. A promising larch with a good line and already good foliage. A vaguely literati style that can be accentuated. It deserves a proper pot. Very satisfied.

FAQs

How is a specimen shipped?
In its pot, with the soil secured and the tree braced inside a rigid box. Delivery across the EU is included in the price. We ship Monday to Wednesday so the tree never spends a weekend in a depot. You can also collect it at our nursery in Merate.
Yes. Every specimen is photographed after its last major styling work and you receive that tree, in that pot. If anything changes before it ships (a branch removed, a repot), we update the photos first.
Any time of year. In the hottest weeks of summer we may hold a shipment for a few days. A tree arriving in winter should go straight to a sheltered spot outdoors, not into a heated room.
In winter and early spring, before the leaves. Keep it outdoors through winter.
Yes. Japanese quince stays outdoors all year and needs the winter cold to flower.
