The story of this tree
In training since it was a sapling, wired and repotted by Luca. A compact mugo: a short, twisting trunk and dense needles close to it, 14 cm tall without the pot in an 11 cm handmade clay pot. Photographed on 13 October 2026, as it ships.
Pinus mugo, the mountain pine of the Alps, is the most forgiving pine for bonsai. It tolerates cold, wind and drought, keeps its needles short in full sun and buds back on old wood more readily than most pines. Its natural habit is low and twisted, which is exactly what a small bonsai needs. It wants full sun and a free-draining mix, and it is repotted in late summer rather than spring. Our mugo pine care guide has the full calendar.
- About 6 years old, 4 of them in training.
- A twisting trunk under a compact, dense canopy.
- 14 cm tall without the pot, in an 11 cm terracotta pot: the smallest of our three mugos.
Every tree has more than one path. Book a 1-to-1 consultation with Luca to map out styling and next steps for this exact material, from €29.
Care details
Full sun, 6+ hours daily — keeps needles short and dense.
Moist but never soggy; water when the top dries.
Early spring until shoots harden; don’t feed late.
Late summer (not spring), every ~3 years when young.
Free-draining mix — akadama, pumice and lava.
Pinch candles in spring; wire late summer–autumn.

Acer Palmatum CultivarsEvening consultation by video call, flawless. Available and professional. Highly recommended.
1-to-1 ConsultationThe courier was late, but the plant is healthy, thanks also to the excellent packaging. A promising larch with a good line and already good foliage. A vaguely literati style that can be accentuated. It deserves a proper pot. Very satisfied.
