The story of this tree

I bought this olive in summer 2024 from the family of the grower who had raised it. It is about thirty years old and has lived in a pot for some fifteen of them; what happened before that, I do not know. It grew as a clump: several trunks from a single base, each with the pale, twisting bark wild olives build with age.

I last repotted it in February 2026, and that repot is on our YouTube channel. The nebari was partly buried on purpose, to push new fine roots close to the base, and the fabric pot works in the same direction. The tree is mature. What it needs now is refinement, not construction.

What I would do next

I would move it to a bonsai pot in spring 2028. Until then, keep cutting the new shoots back to the first pair of leaves: that is how the fine ramification builds up, season after season.

The courier was late, but the plant is healthy, thanks also to the excellent packaging. A promising larch with a good line and already good foliage. A vaguely literati style that can be accentuated. It deserves a proper pot. Very satisfied.

FAQs

How is a specimen shipped?
In its pot, with the soil secured and the tree braced inside a rigid box. Delivery across the EU is included in the price. We ship Monday to Wednesday so the tree never spends a weekend in a depot. You can also collect it at our nursery in Merate.
Yes. Every specimen is photographed after its last major styling work and you receive that tree, in that pot. If anything changes before it ships (a branch removed, a repot), we update the photos first.
Any time of year. In the hottest weeks of summer we may hold a shipment for a few days. A tree arriving in winter should go straight to a sheltered spot outdoors, not into a heated room.
It needs protection from hard frost. In a pot, keep it above about -5 °C: an unheated greenhouse, a cold stairwell or a bright garage works. It must not overwinter in a warm living room.
To push fine roots near the base, together with the partly buried nebari. It is a growing container, not the final pot: the bonsai pot comes in spring 2028.
