European Yew Bonsai (Taxus baccata) – Young Pre-Bonsai

The European yew, Taxus baccata, is one of the great classic conifers of European bonsai — an evergreen that has been shaped in gardens and at temples for centuries and lends itself naturally to the art. What sets it apart from almost every other conifer is how willingly it back-buds: new shoots break not only from young growth but from old, bare, mature wood. That single trait makes yew unusually forgiving to style — you can shorten a leggy branch hard and expect fresh growth to appear close to the trunk, exactly where you want it.

Its foliage is dark, glossy and dense, a deep green that holds through the year and sets off the reddish, finely flaking bark the trunk develops as it matures. The wood itself is famous: extremely strong yet flexible — the timber that made the English longbow — which in bonsai terms means it bends and wires beautifully without snapping. Yew is slow to thicken its trunk, so patience is part of the deal, but it grows and buds vigorously and is exceptionally long-lived; some wild specimens are counted among the oldest trees in Europe.

For all its pedigree it is an easy tree to keep. Yew tolerates shade better than any other conifer we grow — it will thrive on a partly shaded bench — though it colours and stays densest with some direct sun; protect it only from scorching midday summer heat and from hard, freezing winter winds. These are seed-grown young plants, selected for vigour and a promising base, ready to be trained from the very beginning.

Cultivation note: Yew’s willingness to back-bud on old wood is its greatest gift — prune leggy branches back hard and it will push new buds low, close to the trunk, letting you build compact, dense pads over the years. One word of care: every part of the plant except the red flesh of the berry is toxic if eaten, so keep it away from small children and pets and wash your hands after pruning.
