The story of this tree

A classical trident maple in its most iconic and traditional setting: root over rock. The roots run down over the stone into the soil and have gripped it for years, so tree and rock now read as one piece. A sinuous trunk and smooth bark against an edgy, massive rock, all of it in shohin size.

Trident maples take hard pruning well and bud readily, so the canopy above the rock can still be refined branch by branch. The leaves turn orange and red in autumn.

What I would do next

Ready for repotting into a bonsai pot. From there: more ramification, shorter internodes and smaller leaves.

The courier was late, but the plant is healthy, thanks also to the excellent packaging. A promising larch with a good line and already good foliage. A vaguely literati style that can be accentuated. It deserves a proper pot. Very satisfied.

FAQs

How is a specimen shipped?
In its pot, with the soil secured and the tree braced inside a rigid box. Delivery across the EU is included in the price. We ship Monday to Wednesday so the tree never spends a weekend in a depot. You can also collect it at our nursery in Merate.
Yes. Every specimen is photographed after its last major styling work and you receive that tree, in that pot. If anything changes before it ships (a branch removed, a repot), we update the photos first.
Any time of year. In the hottest weeks of summer we may hold a shipment for a few days. A tree arriving in winter should go straight to a sheltered spot outdoors, not into a heated room.
Yes. The roots have grown around it for years; it is part of the tree. Repot with care, keeping rock and root mass together.
Full sun to light shade outdoors. In the hottest summer weeks some afternoon shade protects the leaves from scorching.
