Dawn Redwood Bonsai (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) – Young Pre-Bonsai

The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is a living-fossil conifer and one of the most rewarding trees for a new bonsai grower: fast-growing, with feathery light-green foliage that turns russet-bronze in autumn and a strong pull toward a thick, fluted trunk and radial nebari that ages to warm, reddish bark. Deciduous, water-loving and forgiving, it is a classic subject for informal upright and forest plantings. Grown from seed in our nursery and sold as a young pre-bonsai.

Metasequoia glyptostroboides — the Dawn Redwood in Bonsai

Metasequoia glyptostroboides, the Dawn Redwood, is one of the great stories in the plant world: known only from fossils and believed extinct for millions of years, it was found alive in a remote valley in central China in the 1940s and is now grown all over the world. It is a deciduous conifer — like larch and bald cypress, it wears soft, feathery foliage rather than stiff needles and then drops it for winter. New growth emerges a fresh light green in spring, deepens through summer, and turns warm russet-bronze in autumn before falling to reveal the tree’s structure. A telltale detail for growers: on Metasequoia the leaves and buds sit in opposite pairs, the quickest way to tell it apart from the very similar bald cypress, whose foliage is alternate.

For bonsai, its great gift is speed. Few trees build mass as fast: a young plant thickens rapidly into a trunk with fluted, buttressed roots and a strong radial nebari, so you see real progress in seasons rather than decades. It forgives excess water far more readily than drought — it will take wet soil that would rot other conifers, provided it never sits in stagnant water — and, despite being a conifer, its fast-growing roots take hard pruning well (around a third of the root mass at repotting). All of this suits the classic upright styles, but Metasequoia is above all a forest tree: its naturally straight, tapering trunks make it one of the best species there is for group and forest plantings, which is exactly why it is so often grown and sold as a batch of young seedlings.

This listing offers our Dawn Redwood as a seed-grown young pre-bonsai — an inexpensive, vigorous starting point to train from the beginning, or to combine into a group. For seasonal detail on watering, feeding and building the trunk, see our Metasequoia glyptostroboides bonsai care guide.

Cultivation note: young wood is supple and wires easily — the catch is that Metasequoia thickens so fast that wire must be checked often and removed promptly before it bites in and scars (only this season’s soft green shoots are too brittle to bend, so wire wood that has begun to firm up). Because the species buds back so freely, rub off unwanted shoots early to avoid scars and reverse taper, and on developed trees keep the strongest, high-nitrogen feeding to spring to hold internodes short.

This bonsai had quite a story. It arrived in poor condition, not due to the seller but because the courier took longer than expected. Treevaset was extremely helpful and immediately available to resolve the situation. Highly recommended. I’ve purchased from them multiple times and I will definitely do so again.

Friendly communication and fast delivery. At first, it wasn’t clear to me that the seller ships from Italy, which made me hesitant when ordering plants. However, the plants arrived in excellent condition thanks to very careful packaging.

The courier was delayed, but the plant arrived healthy thanks to excellent packaging. A very promising larch with good movement and already well-developed foliage. It has a subtle literati-style character that can be further enhanced. It deserves a proper, well-chosen pot. Very satisfied.

FAQs

Why is the Dawn Redwood called a "living fossil"?
Metasequoia glyptostroboides was known only from fossils and thought to have been extinct for millions of years — until living trees were discovered in central China in the 1940s. Seed from those trees spread around the world, so the specimen you grow descends from a genuine prehistoric survivor.
Both — it is a deciduous conifer. Like larch and bald cypress it carries soft, feathery foliage instead of hard needles, colours to a warm russet-bronze in autumn, and drops it for winter, revealing the trunk and branch structure. Fresh light-green growth returns in spring. (An easy grower’s tip: Metasequoia has opposite leaves and buds, whereas the similar bald cypress is alternate.)
Yes — it is one of the most forgiving and fast-moving species you can start with. It grows quickly, loves water and forgives excess moisture far better than drought (just never leave it standing in stagnant water), and it buds back readily when pruned. You will see the trunk thicken season to season, which keeps the early years rewarding.
It excels at the upright styles and is one of the very best species for group and forest plantings, thanks to its naturally straight, tapering trunks. Starting from several young plants is the traditional way to build a Dawn Redwood forest, and young pre-bonsai like these are ideal for exactly that.
Very fast. Let it run to thicken the trunk and nebari, repot relatively often as the roots fill the pot quickly, and prune through the growing season to build structure: once a new shoot has four to six pairs of leaves, cut it back to one or two to force finer branching, and rub off unwanted shoots early to avoid scars and reverse taper. Full seasonal detail is in our Metasequoia glyptostroboides bonsai care guide.
