Dawn Redwood Bonsai (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) – Young Pre-Bonsai

Metasequoia glyptostroboides, the Dawn Redwood, is one of the great stories in the plant world: known only from fossils and believed extinct for millions of years, it was found alive in a remote valley in central China in the 1940s and is now grown all over the world. It is a deciduous conifer — like larch and bald cypress, it wears soft, feathery foliage rather than stiff needles and then drops it for winter. New growth emerges a fresh light green in spring, deepens through summer, and turns warm russet-bronze in autumn before falling to reveal the tree’s structure. A telltale detail for growers: on Metasequoia the leaves and buds sit in opposite pairs, the quickest way to tell it apart from the very similar bald cypress, whose foliage is alternate.

For bonsai, its great gift is speed. Few trees build mass as fast: a young plant thickens rapidly into a trunk with fluted, buttressed roots and a strong radial nebari, so you see real progress in seasons rather than decades. It forgives excess water far more readily than drought — it will take wet soil that would rot other conifers, provided it never sits in stagnant water — and, despite being a conifer, its fast-growing roots take hard pruning well (around a third of the root mass at repotting). All of this suits the classic upright styles, but Metasequoia is above all a forest tree: its naturally straight, tapering trunks make it one of the best species there is for group and forest plantings, which is exactly why it is so often grown and sold as a batch of young seedlings.

Cultivation note: young wood is supple and wires easily — the catch is that Metasequoia thickens so fast that wire must be checked often and removed promptly before it bites in and scars (only this season’s soft green shoots are too brittle to bend, so wire wood that has begun to firm up). Because the species buds back so freely, rub off unwanted shoots early to avoid scars and reverse taper, and on developed trees keep the strongest, high-nitrogen feeding to spring to hold internodes short.
