The story of this tree

In training since it was a sapling, wired and repotted by Luca. A short trunk that opens into long, low branches, 22 cm tall without the pot in an 11 cm pale ceramic pot. Photographed on 13 October 2026, as it ships.

Pinus mugo, the mountain pine of the Alps, is the most forgiving pine for bonsai. It tolerates cold, wind and drought, keeps its needles short in full sun and buds back on old wood more readily than most pines. Its natural habit is low and twisted, which is exactly what a small bonsai needs. It wants full sun and a free-draining mix, and it is repotted in late summer rather than spring. How is a specimen shipped?

In its pot, with the soil secured and the tree braced inside a rigid box. Delivery across the EU is included in the price. We ship Monday to Wednesday so the tree never spends a weekend in a depot. You can also collect it at our nursery in Merate.

Is this the exact tree I will receive?

Yes. Every specimen is photographed after its last major styling work and you receive that tree, in that pot. If anything changes before it ships (a branch removed, a repot), we update the photos first.

When is the best time to receive it?

Any time of year. In the hottest weeks of summer we may hold a shipment for a few days. A tree arriving in winter should go straight to a sheltered spot outdoors, not into a heated room.

Can it stay outdoors all winter?

Yes, it is fully hardy. Protect it only from long periods of frozen soil and drying wind.

When do I prune it?

Pinch the new candles in late spring; heavier pruning and wiring in autumn or late winter.
