Larix decidua — the European Larch in Bonsai
The European larch, Larix decidua, is one of the few conifers that lives by the seasons. Unlike pines or junipers it is fully deciduous: soft, fresh-green needles flush in spring, turn a vivid golden yellow in autumn, and drop to leave a fine, bare winter silhouette before it all begins again. Native to the Alps and Carpathians, it is a mountain tree through and through — hardy, vigorous and completely at home outdoors.
For bonsai that seasonal drama is only half the appeal. Larch is fast-growing and forgiving: its branches are flexible and wire easily, it buds back willingly, and it builds fine ramification quickly — which is why it is one of the species most often recommended to newcomers, and a favourite for formal and informal uprights, literati and forest plantings alike. The straight, tapering trunk and, with age, the deeply fissured bark give it the character of a full-grown mountain tree in miniature.
These are seed-grown young plants selected for vigour and a good base; some are already wired to set early movement into the trunk. Keep your larch outdoors year-round in full sun with plenty of fresh air, water generously through the growing season but never let it stand wet, and let it feel the cold of winter — the dormancy is part of its cycle.
Cultivation note: Larch drinks heavily in summer but hates wet feet — water freely when in leaf, always on a free-draining mix, and ease right off during winter dormancy when the tree is bare. Give it as much light as you can: strong sun keeps the needles short and the growth compact, exactly what you want for bonsai.
- Seed-grown European larch — a deciduous conifer that turns from spring green to autumn gold before dropping its needles for winter.
- Fast, vigorous and forgiving: flexible branches wire easily and it back-buds well — ideal for a first conifer or quick styling.
- Its bare winter silhouette reveals the branch structure — a species that rewards fine ramification.

Feedback from growers
This bonsai had quite a story. It arrived in poor condition, not due to the seller but because the courier took longer than expected. Treevaset was extremely helpful and immediately available to resolve the situation. Highly recommended. I’ve purchased from them multiple times and I will definitely do so again.
Young Pre-BonsaiFriendly communication and fast delivery. At first, it wasn’t clear to me that the seller ships from Italy, which made me hesitant when ordering plants. However, the plants arrived in excellent condition thanks to very careful packaging.
Young Pre-BonsaiThe courier was delayed, but the plant arrived healthy thanks to excellent packaging. A very promising larch with good movement and already well-developed foliage. It has a subtle literati-style character that can be further enhanced. It deserves a proper, well-chosen pot. Very satisfied.
Young Pre-BonsaiTrustworthy and honest seller. Well wrapped. Well received item. Recommended 100%. Ringraziare tanti.
